The Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Prof. Udith Jayasinghe says that there is a possibility of a food shortage due to the current crisis in the country.

“If there is a food crisis, we have to go for a food exchange system. If we have a surplus of maize, we can ask another country to provide a suitable food quantity,” he said.

He said that in the event of a food crisis in the country, a commitment should be made to prioritize the most essential categories of food such as pregnant women, mothers, children and the sick and to reduce the number of food groups such as youth.

He pointed out that it is appropriate to restrict the import of non-essential food and beverages and focus on imports only of essential commodities such as milk powder.

However, the Secretary added that there is no need for a three-pronged approach to create a food shortage for the people.
